The Heroes – Drive for 5

2014-04-07

THE HEROES 4-peet

Websters Dictionary defines a dynasty as “a family, team, etc., that is very powerful or successful for a long period of time.”
Are the WHCL Molson Canadian division champions a Calgary rec hockey dynasty?  With their 4th consecutive championship this past March 30th, The Heroes have once again taken the top honors in the league.  After losing to the Boss Tattoo Blaze in the last game of the round robin, The Heroes put up 3 goals and received a shut out from their net minder Mark Hardy to solidify the Championship, and start the dynasty conversation.
After bouncing around in a couple of different leagues in Calgary, the team made a name change back to The Heroes when they joined the WHCL in the 2012 Summer season.  Going back as far as their high school ball hockey team the name has always been there says team rep Trevor Lewis, who was instrumental in bringing the team to the WHCL.
The real strength of The Heroes seems to be their consistent roster.  After seeing them play in 4 division championships they team hasn’t seemed to change much from that first summer until now.  A great feat since after high school the group split up to play all over the country with players playing as far away as the Strait Pirates in the NSJHL (Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League), as well as a few playing closer to home in the AJHL for teams such as the Calgary Royals, Calgary Canucks, Canmore Eagles, Drumheller Dragons, and Fort McMurray Oil Barons.  We can’t forget about the players that went south to play at Adrian College or the University of Alabama Huntsville in the NCAA either.  Not bad for a group of friends that started out playing as Glenlake Hawks.
This summer The Heroes have dedicated their season to “THE DRIVE FOR 5”, and I know there are seven other Molson Canadian division teams looking to dethrone them, and take over top spot.
