Temporary Access Road to WinSport NOW OPEN
2015-09-02Click here for info on accessing the park.
Beginning today, visitors to WinSport Canada Olympic Park will access the park via a temporary access road, located 500 metres west of the entrance at Bowfort Road/Canada Olympic Road SW. This entrance is now closed to traffic.
The new temporary entrance, which is a result of the City of Calgary’s construction on the interchange on the TransCanada Highway, is located near the ATCO Centre and entrance to the Frank King Day Lodge.
In addition, a secondary entrance has been created on the west side of the park via 1st Avenue SW. Users coming from the west are encouraged to enter via West Valley Rd. and Crestmont Blvd., to 101 Street SW. Visitors will then enter the park west of the Markin MacPhail Centre near Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. The City of Calgary is working with WinSport to provide signage on this access route.
As a result of construction and new access routes, please expect potential delays over the next several months when travelling through the area or entering the WinSport campus.
It is recommended that program and lesson participants or those attending events at the Markin MacPhail Centre allow extra time when planning their arrival to the park. The City is working with WinSport to help keep the traffic flowing.
The previous dual-lane turn into Canada Olympic Park from westbound on the TransCanada Highway is now a single lane into the new temporary access. However, the City of Calgary will increase the turning time through the light.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2017.
From the City of Calgary: The finished project design includes a six-lane cross-section for the TransCanada and a single point urban interchange at Bowfort Road with a six-lane bridge accommodating dual left turns in all directions and two through lanes in each direction on Bowfort Road.
The design also incorporates a new storm water management system, utility relocations, construction of sidewalks and pathways, and landscaping.
