The annual WinSport Hockey Canada League all-star game took place on Sunday at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre, bringing together some of the best players from the 90-team adult rec hockey league.
Sunday’s game, which began at 10 a.m. on Arena A, was set to feature 32 players determined by league officials and league coordinator Shane Meahan.  With only 27 of the 32 players showing up for the event, all skaters in attendance got more ice-time that they had expected. All players left Sunday having met a few new faces across the league and generally had a great time despite the 12-3 win by team Molson.

This year the All-Star game provided the opportunity to honour the league’s top general manager, although he wasn't in attendance to receive the award. In previous years, the award typically went to the top player, but this year Meahan decided to take it a step further.
“I wanted to take the opportunity this year to put a different spin on it and recognize the GM of the year,” said Meahan. “Out of the 90 teams, which guy runs the No. 1 team in the league.”
League officials, Meahan and arena staff helped to determine the winner. In addition to the recognition, he’ll receive a cool beer fridge, courtesy of Molson Coors Canada.
“I wanted to make sure we could recognize the player that everyone seems to enjoy having around,” said Meahan. “We wanted one of the guys that the rink staff walks into the dressing room at the end of the game and goes ‘these guys are always a treat to have here’. They respect the facility. One that the officials go ‘oh good I’m reffing this team, I know they are going to respect me. It’s somebody who really fits into the league dynamic.”

Since its inception three years ago, the WHCL is one of Calgary’s premiere adult leagues.
“The WHCL is a place where players of any ability can play competitive hockey in a safe, enjoyable environment, whether you have played for two or three years of your life or played all the way up to minor pro,” said Meahan.
The league, which is a partnership between WinSport and Hockey Canada, features more than 1,600 players during the winter season, with a waiting list for additional teams.  An additional 72 teams play in the summer league.  Sundays game was proof that you could pair players from Division 1 through Division 12 and everyone on the ice was bound to have a great time, and all because we had the right personalities.
The 12 - 3 score wasn't quite the indication of how tight the game was on the ice.  Although the on ice stars were all wearing the Red jerseys at the end of the day, Team Coors not only had more smiles and laughs, but will also have great video from the games only player/camera-man Gordon Bird from the MUSTARD TIGERS.  With 6 points (5G, 1A), the BOSS TATTOO BLAZE GM Matt Palmer showed he had the hot hands all day.  The stand out player of the game award has to go to Team Molson goaltender, from the BLADES OF STEEL Christopher Chung.  With 19 saves and 0 Goals Against Chung stood on his head for his 30 minutes of hockey while team Coors outshot the high powered offence of Team Molson 19 - 9.
Lets hope we can all get together at the conclusion of the Summer season for the next round of the WHCL MOLSON COORS ALL-STAR EVENT. And make sure you keep checking back on the WHCL Web Page to find out who get the nod as our GM of the year.
