The DEAL - THIS IS A GREAT DEAL FOR CALGARY
- $4.4B injected into the local economy creating jobs, prosperity and growth – at a time when we really need it – this will help stimulate our economy
- $1B in wages for Calgarians – over 15,000 jobs spread throughout the design, build and operate process. This includes the equivalent of 2200+ FT jobs for at least 2 years of employment
- City of Calgary invests $390M cash (as against $1.453B from Government of Canada and $700M from Government of Alberta – tremendous leverage and GOC's $ will go somewhere else if we don’t host the games)
- For every $1 Calgary invests it gets $10 in return (factoring in all sources of games direct cash flows)
- $2.523 B – Public investment totals (rounded)
- Government of Canada for hosting grant – $1.453 B cash this is available only once per decade for a major event held in Canada
- Province of Alberta $700 M cash
- City of Calgary $370 M cash. This does not include a $20 million insurance policy to protect against any cost over-run’s. The City was able to leverage a $150 M investment not actually included for the Games in the Rivers District as a match by the G of Canada to increase their allotment up to $1.453 B
- Canmore $3 M cash
- $2.23 B from Games revenues and sponsorships including $1.2 B from the IOC (this is the first time ever the IOC will guarantee investment into a set of Games)
- $180 M Legacy Fund built into budgets: providing sustainable funding for facilities and programs that will keep our city healthy, including our youth, Indigenous youth, and world-class athletes who choose to make a career in sport. This sets this Games apart in planning as part of “normal operations”; a large Legacy.
- The capital budget is clear and well documented.
- There is a $1 B contingency built into the budget plans for capital and operations
- Over the past 20 years all Olympic Games have made a profit on operations. This set of Games will achieve similar results.
- Livability/quality of life
- Legacy (not a “10 day party”); stimulate interest, investment, and use prior to the Games and a long time after the Games.
- Increased Civic spirit and volunteerism
- Affordable housing – provision of a minimum 1800 housing units, most of which are designated as affordable, including 24 athletes housing units in Canmore
- Attract top talent – position Calgary as a higher ranking most livable city thereby attracting interest from corporations and building more opportunities for employment and talent
- New and renewed sport facilities 11 revitalized facilities and 2 new. This very favorably compares against the 4 new regional recreation centres that the City has built over the past 3 years for in excess of $480 M. Calgary’s total cash investment in the games is $370 M. A great benefit.
- Refresh, revitalize and renew the Olympic Oval – “the world’s fastest ice”, and WinSport facilities, the proud host of 7 world cups in the winter of 2018/2019 – more than any other single site venue in the world
- Diversity/Accessibility/Reconciliation
- Brand recognition
- Calgary brand marketing ($1 B in value; Vancouver has been able to verify this is the value of brand improvement from the 2010 Games))
- Rebuild ‘can do attitude’ – ability to overcome, compete and succeed
- International leader
- Put Calgary/Alberta/Canada back on the world stage
We strongly encourage all Calgarians to exercise their right to vote, and vote in favour of this tremendous opportunity to host the 2026 Olympic Games.
